The Horizon Award: Recognizing the Proactive Achievements of Communications Centers

This award serves to recognize the technological advancements of communications centers across the nation with the enhancement of voice and data communications. Technology has a direct correlation and impact on operational policies and procedures. The intent of this award is to acknowledge the efforts of communications centers that have proactively assessed and met the technological and operational needs of their center, employees and service population.

Nomination Procedures

  • Nominations will be open to the public safety communications industry
  • A nomination form shall be used to consistently gather information on the award candidate
  • The selection team will consist of at least 3 people as designated by the 9-1-1 Emerging Technologies Committee Chair
  • The selection committee review shall be blind as it relates to vendor-specific technology
  • The award sponsor will send a representative to the annual conference to present the award
  • The selection committee reserves the right to contact nominees for Q&A and for clarification/completion of information from the application form
  • Selection committee members will not include employees from commercial members
  • Selection/nomination will be done annually
  • A winner will be recognized from both categories:
    • Category I: Small - Medium PSAP (1-75 Employees)
    • Category II: Large PSAP (76+ Employees)
  • Process review shall occur annually between November 1 and January 31
  • Nominations open February 1 - April 1
  • Selection process occurs between April 1 and April 15
  • Prior-year nominees may be re-nominated and will be recognized as multi-year award winners if fully-eligible
  • A representative from the winning PSAP(s) will be recognized at the annual conference, in Public Safety Communications (the official magazine of APCO International) and on the Web site.
  • The award winner(s) will identify a spokesperson to participate in the award/recognition and media release.
