Today, President Biden announced the designation of Jessica Rosenworcel to serve as Chairwoman of the Federal Communications Commission and nominated her to serve another term at the FCC. The President also nominated Gigi Sohn to serve as an FCC Commissioner and Alan Davidson to serve as Administrator of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration. Rosenworcel’s change from acting chairwoman to permanent chairwoman is effective immediately, but all three nominees must be confirmed by the Senate.
Rosenworcel has served as acting FCC chair since January 2021 and becomes the first woman to be designated as permanent chair. She has more than two decades of experience in communications policy and public service and was first appointed as an FCC Commissioner in 2012. Prior to that, she served as Senior Communications Counsel for the United States Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation where she played a key role in the formation of the legislation that created FirstNet and a significant R&D program for public safety communications. Sohn and Davidson also have extensive backgrounds in communications policy and regulation.
“APCO congratulates Chairwoman Rosenworcel on her designation as permanent chair, and each of these distinguished professionals on their nominations,” APCO Executive Director and CEO Derek K. Poarch said. “Ms. Rosenworcel has repeatedly proven her devotion to promoting the best interests of public safety. She has made a point to truly understand the needs of the public safety community, including through her many visits to 9-1-1 centers throughout the country. With her expertise and commitment, I am confident she will serve the country well.”
