APCO International Releases 6th Edition of Communications Training Officer Course

Alexandria, Va. – The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International has recently launched an update to the APCO Communications Training Officer (CTO) course. This course provides comprehensive training to experienced telecommunicators on the roles and responsibilities of CTOs in running an agency’s training program. Previous editions of the CTO program have been implemented in hundreds of agencies nationwide. Two versions of the updated course are available: CTO 6th Edition and CTO 6th Edition Instructor. Delivery begins in January 2022, and both are now open for registration.

The updated training includes the essential elements of a CTO program based on the industry recognized “San Jose Model” while also incorporating the requirements set by the national standard for CTO programs — APCO ANS 3.101.3-2017 Minimum Training Standards for Public Safety Communications Training Officers. Upon successful completion of the course, students earn CTO certification.

“The Communications Training Officer course continues to be a vital training opportunity for our industry,” said APCO Executive Director and CEO Derek Poarch. “With the continual changes and challenges faced by emergency communications centers, it is essential for those who provide training to have the most up-to-date information to deliver to their agency staff. We are pleased to continue to provide this much-needed training to the public safety communications community.”

Those certified in the CTO 5th Edition may register for the CTO 6th Edition Update course for a limited time at no cost to meet recertification requirements. Additional information can be found at CTO 6th Edition Update Course FAQs for students or CTO 6th Edition Update Course FAQs for instructors.
