Wednesday, August 7 | 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.
Ryan Dedmon & Cassie Sexton, 911 Training Institute
In this session, Ryan and Cassie explored strategies for developing a robust public education program that prioritizes citizen safety, even with limited resources. With light banter and great energy, the group was given the speaker’s background information, session objectives, and a great presentation.
Both new and perhaps familiar insights were shared regarding public engagement events, budget planning with little money, and education sharing opportunities for citizens. Audience participation was strongly encouraged. This prompted positive discussion, engagement, and feedback.
Ideas shared included the following:
- Utilize free or low-cost resources such as Canva for content creation.
- Tailor messaging to different audiences.
- Get creative with DIY materials.
- Leverage social media for public education.
- Host open houses, safety fairs or workshops.
- Partner with local organizations and businesses.
- Use events to build relationships with the community.
During Cassie’s multi-tasking card game, and through audience participation, she showed us just how much or how little attention we give to people and things around us when we’re “in the zone “. It was an interesting take on how “we” handle things.
To add to the session, and to provide visual aids, Ryan and Cassie also had items to display and share with the audience. They provided a session with useful tips and great advice to further an ECC’s public relations and education program.
For those who have yet to start a public relations education program in their agency, Ryan and Cassie provided excellent information to help them get started.
