Leighann Schultz, Cobb County Department of Emergency Communications, Georgia
The Training & Quality Assurance Coordinator from Cobb County DEC presented this unique perspective of how training for her first, second, third and fourth 5K and eventually a 10K race led her to understand her own professional development.
Shultz drew understandable parallels between the motivations, obstacles, various stages of progress and plateaus, and eventual achievement during the training and completion of her races with the day-to-day choices of her work and career.
Schultz says, “I went from sitting at the console, with vague goals and no plan – but signing up for that first race changed my life.” She explained that the training increased routine-type thinking, dedication when you really do not feel like it, and pushing through the excuses, and that even the “highs” of training helped her understand these were the very things that were hindering her in setting other goals and working plan to reach them.
