In a June PSC eNews President’s Channel, Immediate Past President Tracey Hilburn announced APCO’s commitment to focusing on the difficult issues of diversity and equality within the public safety communications community. I write today to update you on our progress.
The Executive Committee recently took the opportunity to meet virtually with a cross-section of the membership in a moderated conversation as to what APCO can do to address diversity, equity and inclusion matters within emergency communications centers. The session was honest and helpful in thinking through how best APCO can move forward on these issues.
From this candid conversation, we have begun initial efforts to underscore the importance of diversity and fairness for all members in the workplace.
This initial review begins with the development and administration of a survey of the membership to assess the scope of diversity, equity and inclusion concerns. The Executive Committee and APCO International are committed to developing effectual training to promote awareness, education and understanding for the public safety communications community. The survey is currently under development.
Additionally, the APCO Institute is committed to incorporating the findings of the survey into the development of training and educational programs for both management and line-level staff.
We live in a changing period. We know your work is stressful and important. Our personal and professional lives are challenging, and it is imperative we work to ensure not only trust but respect and dignity for each other.
APCO leadership is committed to continuing these important efforts and keeping the membership informed as we move forward.
Stay safe and healthy, and as always, thank you for the work you are doing every day for this great profession.
